How much do we rely on the media?

Hi classmates... sorry I'm a little behind on my first post. It was evident that I hadn't posted anything yet when Dr. Coyne scrolled through the blog list today in class. So I figured I better get on the ball and post something!

So last week, on the second day of classes, my desktop computer started acting crazy and I figured I must have a virus or something. I just turned off my computer in frustration and didn't do anything about for a day or so.  I found out that my boyfriend's roommate is a computer whiz so I asked him if he could help me figure it out.  While he was fixing it he was skeptical whether he would be able to fix it or not.  I started to really worry! I began listing things that I NEED on my computer... like my billions of pictures from the past 5 years, and my 8,000 song itunes library.  And then I realized how much I actually do RELY on the media. The media has become such an intricate part of life, and I think that sometimes I don't realize just how much I depend on having my music, pictures, facebook, etc... kind of sad.

  1. Abby, great observation! I've often thought about how not only do we rely on the media as individuals, but the whole world does! Think what would happen if all the world's computer just shut down. It's crazy to think about. Nothing would work, including stores, banks, maybe even running water! I try not to get too worried though because the media has done so much good in spread the gospel and connecting us to others that I think someone is looking out for it. ;)

  2. So true. I had to go without texting for a few weeks and I felt so out of the social network! Then I had to survive without a cell phone for maybe a week and I felt alone, vulnerable, naked, and completely isolated.

  3. Such a true statement...it's way sad hoe much I rely on my computer. I lived in Europe during the summer and not having a phone was a crazy/wierd feeling, but after a while I started to LOVE it!! The media seems like it is everywhere in our lives :)
